Core concepts
Records, ties, the desk and sessions — the handful of ideas everything else is built on.
Canonex keeps a single model of your campaign, and each area shows that same model from a different angle. You enter something once and it is available everywhere.
Records
A record is anything in your campaign that is worth remembering: an NPC, a creature, a location, a faction, a shop, a deity, a piece of lore, a clue, a quest, a journal or a player character.
Each record type has a sheet shaped for how you use it. An NPC reads like a dossier, a creature like a combat instrument, and a journal like a page. Every sheet keeps secrets and GM notes clearly apart from what the players might learn.
You can add your own record types in Settings, with their own fields and colour.
Ties
A tie connects two records: Rashida trusts Usilket, Harun fears Captain Vashti Moor, Lady Isolde funds Brother Ephraim. A tie has a type and a direction, and it has a visibility:
- Structural ties describe how the world is arranged: member of, located in.
- Story ties are the ones that drive play: trusts, owes, fears.
- Secret ties are known only to the GM. They are drawn as dashed ember lines.
To tie two records, drag one record onto the other’s sheet. The Campaign Graph shows every tie at once and can trace the chain between any two records.
The desk
The desk is a zoomable workspace. Records become cards that you summon, move, resize, pin and dismiss. When you place two tied records near each other, the tie appears between them. See The desk.
Sessions
A session has an outline of beats, the material you plan to use, the party you expect, and after play, what actually happened. See Plan, run, remember.
Campaign memory
Canonex keeps a change log of every record and tie. Home turns it into campaign memory: what changed since last session, the threads you left open, the faces about to return, and the prep you never used. Every sheet also shows Last time we saw…
