Using Canonex
Plan, run, remember
How a session moves through Canonex, from the first outline to wrap-up.
Plan
Create a session in Sessions. Give it a number, a title, the party level and, if you use milestones, the milestone it is building towards.
The session outline is made of beats: the scenes or moments you expect to reach. Open the Builder to see the whole Codex beside the outline, then drag in what each beat needs:
- records: NPCs, locations, factions, creatures
- encounters, or placeholders to build later
- maps and images
- read-aloud text
- notes
Anything that doesn’t belong to a particular beat goes into Loose material. Each item can hold notes for this session only, such as “begins hidden behind the machinery”, without changing the record itself.
Run
Use Start Session when the players sit down. The Run area becomes the cockpit for the session, and the GM bar docks along the bottom of the window:
- Jot — press Ctrl + J anywhere to capture a note. Type
@nameto tag a record. - NPC — make an NPC on the spot and note that the party met them.
- Names — made-up names by ancestry, ready to copy or turn into an NPC.
- DCs — DCs by level around your party’s level, with the difficulty adjustments.
- Clock — put a progress clock on the desk.
- Rules — search the rules in a reference card.
- Start encounter — the session’s planned encounters come first.
As you play, mark outline items reached, deferred or skipped.
Remember
At the end of the night, wrap up the session. Review the notes you jotted during play and promote the ones that matter into campaign canon. Material you didn’t reach can carry forward into the next session, so no prep goes to waste.
Everything you changed is recorded, and the next time you open Home, campaign memory picks up where you left off.
